GENERAL HAMILTON AT TAKAPAU L'A.Ml'.

(united Press Association.} TAKAPAU CAMP. May 5. General Sir lan Hamilton inspected the camp at Takapan in glorious weather to-dav. He was accompanied by his start".' General G<dlev. the Lions. '.!. A. Allen, H. 1). Beil. and W. Fras.-r. Mes.-rs J. Escott and D. Buick, M.'sP., were also in attendance. The Gen-eraL arrived at 2.30 )j.m.. and during the afternoon ho inspected the machiup guns, tiring ball cartridges. He watched the mounted troops in actii.'n. and also the infantrv and artillery brigades, from a spectacular point. The proceedings were not particularly striking, but from a soldier's point of view were most- interesting.

"I he General took a keen interest in the doings ot all the troops, asking questions of the officers and complimenting them upon the work that he had seen. In an interview General Harrilton said that the men who had come under his notice were- of a very Hue stamp; they were all country troops, and the men were in some seiises half soldiers already. Continuing:, he said the mounted men could ride splendidlv, and the only thing that struck him was that horses were prettv cheap. The regiment he had seen."the Manawntu Mounted Rifles were remarkably well mounted.- The General also inspected the camp and cook houses, and expressed himself as well pleased with what ho saw. The general training work of the camp is steadilv proceeding with improved weather. The men are taking interest in their task, and no complaints are now heard There is no likelihood of an occurrence like that which occurred on Sundav night- happening. Ihe whole trouble seems to' be due solely over the extra- days involved getting to and from the carrp. The matter is being thoromdilv inquired info. A. case of diphtheria occurred to-day. the victim being a member of the Napier Battery. Several minor casualties are reported, but nothing serious. ■ This Day.
