ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
FALL OFF A TRAM. {Uniibu Press Association.* CHRISTGHURCH, May 4. Lumsden Sherriffs, a retired farmer, of Lower Riccarton, was killed in the city on Saturday by falling off a tram car. At the inquest a. verdict of accidental death was returned. A SEAMAN DROWNED. GREYMOUTH, May 4. About 10.20 o'clock on Saturday night William .Tyrell, about 30 years of age, cowic ing on going aboard the vessel, moored at the wharf. A companion .heard a splash, and threw a line overboard, but there was no sign of the missing man. A search was made the following morning, and the body was found immediately below where the- deceased fell. The <iec.ea.sed was evidently stunned by tho 5 ill. ;is there was a lacerated wound on the forehead. The inquest, which was field 10-<iay, was adjourned, to make further inquiries as to the deceased's sobriety at the time of the accident. The deceased joined the vessel at We'li.ugKill. SUDDEN DEATH ON A STEAMER. INVERCARGILL. May 4. When the Maitai, from- Melbourne, was Hearing Bluff at 7 o'clock this morning, a girl passenger, Mary Josephine \"oiing, died. It was "understood that bvfore leaving .Melbourne the girl had spent three weeks in the hospital suffering from dysonlry, and was in a very weak state when she embarked. ACCIDENTALLY SHOT. WAITARA, May 4. A youth named Ernest Dare Spencer, aged 19 years, was found dead in a po'ol of blood this morning. He went to work on disc harrows, carrying a loaded gun with which ha was to shoot birds to a tame hawk. It is presumed that he got in trouble with the horses, and the gun went off. Deceased's head was much shattered. DEATH AT SEA. AUCKLAND, This Day. Mervyn McKie, a passenger to Australia bv the Makura, died on Sunday before the vessel reached Auckland. The cause of death was consumption.
