While a party of men from Limestone Island, Whangarei. were fishing in the neighbourhood of the Hen and 'Chicken Island on Sunday, Mr D. P. Fitzgibbons caught a frdst fish, 9ft in length. The frost fish is something of a marine curiosity in northern waters, and - although specimens have occasionally been cast "up by the sea, it, is only on rare occasions that this fish is caught b\ a hand line as was the case on Sunday.

A half-caste native, named John Reni, pleaded not guilty at the Magistrate's Court this morning to being found on the premises of the Tasiran Hotel on Good Friday, 10th dnst. A new regulation by the Police Ser-_ vice Commissioner ■toas gazetted last night. It, prescribes a special Departmental examination for inspectors of factories, etc., belonging to the Labour Department, who are now placed iri the general division, and desire promotion to a higher grade in the clerical division. The first examination under this regulation will be held next week. There are two vacancies to be filled, officer in charge of the Department in Christchurch, and inspector in charge of the inspectors in the Wellington district. Some do?en inspectors will -sit for the examination. Besides the subject of arithmetic, the examination will bear practically on the higher work of the officers of the Department.—'Press Association.
