AN ARCH SWINDLER. fPREss Association. —Copyright.) ROME, April 13. The self-styled Count Lepanno Battisa de Cavicehy, the son of an indigent porter, was arrested at Stresa. By means of matrimonial advertisements he corresponded with 500 society girls. The police found a hundred love letters, including one from a princess. Lepanno became the fiance of of Giuseppina Mutti at Milan, aged 20. He represented himself to be the heir to a colossal fortune, and urgently needed £4OOO. He induced her to simulate a. burglary at the family palace, and haftd him all her mother's and her own jewellery, and sign hills of exchange, which the family redeemed for £4OOO in order to hush up the scandal. Many pawn tickets,. were found on Lepanno, the proceeds of jewellery robberies.
