NEW HOSPITAL

PLANS SUBMITTED TO THE BOARD. APPOINTMENT OF ARCHITECT. DEFERRED. , ; The new hospital for Nelson was fur-, ther discussed by the Hospital Board yesterday afternoon. , Mr Cawthron placed before the Board: the plans of the new building, these hav-y ing been prepared by Mr A. R. Criffinf of Nelson. Dr Valintine eaid that to give an opinion that would be of any value - ir} regard to the suitableness of the plans he would have to give them several hours' study, and also to consult with, officers of his Department. From a sory perusal of the plans he could say; that the four wards provided for were" quite adaptable to the site. He would suggest that the Board appoint an" architect, and that the architect confer, with the Department. , Mr Cawthron said that all his gifts to; Nelson had been for the district, and foithe citizens. Nelson had turned out | many clever men, and, he would ask they Board to appoint a local man as archil, tect. Mr Cawthron would like Mr Griffin (who had designed the Institute, the Church Steps, and other works in Nelson) to be appointed to the position, if? the Board approved. Amongst Nelsonians Mv Cawthron mentioned as having done well in their professions were Mr C Y. Fell, Professor Rutherford*, Mr CJ Harley, Dr'Gibbs. *!!r"H. D. Bell, and Professor Wofley. Applications for the position of architect were read from ten firms, in differ n ent parts of the Dominion (three fromNelson), members generally considering' that it was only fair that these should be : read to the Board. ' After discussion, it was decided by; 7 to 2, on the motion of Mr Allen, se{ conded by Mr Lock, that the final appointment of an architect be deferred •' for a month. In the meantime the plan • drawn by Mr Griffin is to be submitted., to the InspectorrGeneral. ', On the motion of. the. Chairman it was resolved by 7: to 2 that- a clerk of works be appointed. Mrs Fell moved and Mr Hoult second ed, that for preparation of plans, and rupervision the Board pay commission not exceeding 5 per cent. - This was ; carried on the voices, and the Board adjourned till the evening.
