SOME GOOD SHOOTING. YESTERDAY'S RESULTS, (United Press Association.) r , WELLINGTON, March 4. The conditions were almost ideal for the shooting to-day when the competitors went on the mounds, and the marksmanship at th«* 800 yards range in the Ou#a match was excellent. , No less t<HiH Seven possibles were recorded, and eight "all buts" were returned. The men who fired first had a slight advantage in the conditions, as about nine o'clock a light rear wind commenced to blow, which somewhat hampered the men who fired in the later stages. The possible* were sdot - e,l by Pickering (LitiU>n)j White (Auckland), Carter (Nelson), Clark (Rangitikei), Flynn (Auckland), Ball (Linton), and H. Loveday (Ohura). Masefield (Sounds), who has been shooting very consistently, secured 47 and 46 respectively, thus making top score. A Henderson (Sounds) and H. Loveday (Ohura) made 93 each. Much interest attached to Olliver's- shooting. - He was leading in :the aggregates after the close of yesterday's- firing. Olliver- secured a useful 47 at the shorter range, but fell all to pieces at- 1000 yards, only making 27. It should be stated that the wind, considerably increased at 1000 yards, and two competitors completely, failed to find the target. Ching (Nelson) planted 45 on at each target, and Dickson (Linton), and Carter (Nelson), also secured 90, with 50 on the first attempt, and 40 on the second. Amongst the 89's were Mcintosh (Rangitikei). Bent (Auckland), Hunt (Suburbs), and Milrov (Nelson).> The Taranik match, ten shots at JIOOO yards, the semi-final for the belt, was fired after lunch in bright sunshine, and a light rear wind ; and again the experienced marksmen held their own. On the Sommerville range . the best score was made by Masefield. H e secured" if our with his sighter, which he retained, and with the exception of one three the remainder of his score was made up of bull's eyes. Masefield received a hearty round from a large knot of bystanders. Loveday (Ohura) was next with 45, and Pearc'e (Sandon) and Duncan (Westport) each .scored 44. The wind was baffling and tricky during the match, and some competitors had the mortification of rising with blanks against their names. On the Seddon range, where much the same atmospheric conditions prevailed,-Vennell (Tewharan) made top score with 48, his nearest attendants being Brownlee (Auckland), Maunsell (Opaki), and Steenson (Oamaru), who each registered 45. General Godley was in camp to-day, accompanied b yMi's Godley-and Lady Sybil Grey. Lieutenant-Colonel Bailie, M.L.C., an Indian veteran, was also in camp as a visitor. This morning, owing to the death of his father, Rifleman R. J King, a member of the Opaki Club, and an ex-champion, left for Masterton.
