NURSES' HOME

CONSIDERATION BY HOSPITAL BOARD. £ISOO TO BE LEVIED. A definite forward step* to erect a nurses' home at the Hospital, was made at lastmight's sitting of the Nelson Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, when a motion was moved by Mrs Fell was carried agreeing to levy a rate of £ISOO towards-the cost of such a building. A sum of £BOO has already been raised by those interested in the proposal, and the Government subsidy of £ for £ on -the lew will make available a, sum of about £3BOO for the building. . Mrs Fell, in accordance with notice of motion, moved • that in addition to the levy for the current'year, £ISOO be ' levied to assist in building- a nurses' | home. In> moving the motion, Mrs Fellj said she felt discussion was unnecessary v as all would adrrit the necessity for such an institution. In-view of. the gift" of Mr Cawthron, it Was necessary to make provision for the nurses. Mrs "Watson seconded the motion. Mr Lock said ,he could not support' the motion until more data- as t'p the cost of the building was available. There, was no doubt as to the necessity for such a home. Mrs Fell was quite prepared to with : draw her motion if a better one was forthcoming. V Mr Higgins- agreed that the motion was necessary, and. that a nurses' home should be pushed on with before the new hospital. He had always seen the necessity for such a home, as the present quarters of the nurses ,were not at all) satisfactory. -They should have accommodation away from the hospital, where the nurses could enjoy themselves in a proper way. He would support the resolution. Mr Simpson had no objection to make, but felt that a sketch plan ©f the proposed home should be submitted, with an estimate of the cost. The Board would then have data tojjo'on and could lew the amount necessary. On the suggestion of the Chairman, Mrs Fell altered her motion to read that the building be erected on the site al-' ready choseu. Mr Hewetson moved an amendment that consideration be postponed for a month. It would add 50 per cent, all round to the rates, and there was .nothing definite to go on at present as to the cost. In the meantime the necessary information could be obtained. He quite agreed that a home was necessary, j 'On Mrs Fell agreeing to make the sum to be levied £IOOO, Mr Hewetson did not press his motion. Mr Simpson considered that a levy sufficient to* cover the whole cost should be made, instead of -possibly making, two levies. , , , The Chairman thoughts that perhaps | the original motion should be adhered. The amendn-ent was not seconded, and the motion as moved by Mrs Fell, levying £ISOO, was carried on the voices. ————— " . n.l
