DISTRICT NEWS

WAMTI. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The funeral of the late Frankly n Re id Hoult (whose sudden death on Friday last caused somewhat of a sensation in this district) took place on Sunday. The place of interment was St. Joseph's, Wakefield. The attendance was large, almost a record for the district. Members of the 'local Bearer Corps, under Surgeun-Colonil Pen-less, attended, and also acted as bearers. The service at the graveside .was impressively conducted by the Rev. Father Ainsworth. At the conclusion of the service the Last Post was sounded. Messrs P. Best, Higgins, and. Major Franklyii, were present, • representing the Waiirea County Council and Hospital Board respectively. Mr and Mrsv E. S. Hoult,. and family have the sincere sympathy of'a wide circle of. friends in their, sad ".and dis T tressing bereavement. • WEATHER AND .CROP's! The dry. hot 'weather "of the; last month has left its mark on the country, while most • desirable' for - harvesting operations, pastoralists, orchardist's and hop-growers would. have..been glad of a good downpour of rain. ; The springs are getting low, and the stock are. not doing as well as could b.e desired. Turnip and rape crops are-also suffering. Hoppicking is now in. full swing, but pickers are not' too plentiful. - It is rather too early to estimate the, quantity, but, <>iven favourable conditions for harvesting, the quality should be excellent.
