MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting oi the \\ aimea County Council was held to-day. 1 iesent: Crs. Everett (Chairman), Best, Druniruond, Hewetson, Macmahon. Corder. and Hoult. FINANCE. ENGINEER'S REPORT.

The County Engineer [-Mr G. A. Whiteside) reported tor the month as followsMaua i Riding: ihe ncw cemetery at Stoke had been surveyed, and 600* plots pegged out. About onethird oi the ground had been pegged out and the wliule area wa» designed to contain 2136 plots. . The cemetery was now ready for burials. Considerable repairs had been carried out on the -Maitai Valley road, also in the direction of the Pelorus lliver, out of thirds. Gravel patching had been done on the Bisliopdale road, and the gang had been at work patching on the Collins and \\f-n----•»amca roads. —Wai-iti Riding. ic footpath had bec-n continued to the school without kerbing or gravel to the extent of the money authorised Ihe work of reducing the grade on Church Hill, Wakefield, "had been put in hand. He had arranged with I)r. Pearlers to acquire the small portion ot_ land opposite the parsonage entrance lor road extension purposes for £2O. subject to confirmation by the Council.—Mot up iko , Ridinc : In Dovedale metal patching had been done, and watertablesattended to. He proposed proceeding with the metalline of the new road approaching Stanlev" Brook bridge. Bridge repairs had been carried out on Tophouse road. Wangapeka Riding: A plan ot the proposed new bridge over Donaid s Creek provided a span of 40tt. The No. 2 road machine had -resumed work at Kiwi, and was working down towards Tapawera.— Motueka Ridmg : A small bridge had been erected on the Wai--wero road, near Hudson's. A new bridge was required to replace the Ricr ht-angled Bridge. Ngatimoti. At the Motueka bridge a new concrete abutment- had been put in on the eastern side. Much needed work was being proceeded with on the Takaka Hill road.—Moutere Riding: Repairs had been carried out on the Rosedale Hill. On the Moutere Hills ruts had been raken in. and the loose gravel blended -ivith clay. No work had been done with the" traction engine during December owing to the wet weather up till the holidays. At Tasman negotiations for the acquisition of a piece of land from Mr Horton for road extension purposes were about completed. Arising out of the Engineer's Teport. it was resolved, on Cr. Drummond's motion, that- tenders be called for the bridge over Creek. It was resolved, on the Chairman's motion, that the Engineer prepare plans and specifications for a structure to replace the right-angled bridge at Ngatimoti.

It was resolved, on the Chairman's motion, that the road from Orinoco to Nendorf be repaired. The Engineer's report was then adopted. RANGERS' REPORTS. Ranger P. Coleman reported that he had warned owners of stock in Wairoa Gorge, Sherry, Tadmor, Woodstock, Stanley Brook, Dovedale, and Waimea West. The ranger asked for instructions regarding traffic without lights, which matter was becoming serious. The Wakapuaka ranger, J. Flower, reported that the roads were as free from stock as it was possible for one man to keep them. Bicycles without lights had been the worst trouble, mostly travellers who would not give their iiames. The Chairman said that travelling without lights was becoming a serious menace. C-rs. Corder and Best- agreed that there was a very grave danger to the public from people driving and riding without liehts. On Cr. Hcult's'motion it was resolved that the two rangers be appointed traffic inspectors, and that they receive as remuneration the fines imposed. On Cr. Hewetson's motion it was resolved that the police be furnished with a sealed copy of the by-laws and requested to take action against unregistered motorists. COUNCILLORS' REPORTS. The Chairman reported recommending that no present action be taken in connection with the matter -complained o£ by Mrs Williams, Paugatotara. He stated that there was a sufficient- alternative route and the work asked for was of a. very costly nature. —Adopted. The Chairman and Cr Corder reported inspecting the south branch of the Maitai. They recommended, re application by Mr Smith, that he be granted £4.. provided he forms the road 10ft wide, and to the satisfaction of the engineer.—Adopted. The Chairman and Cr Drummond reported that they_ had authorised tho widening of the Table Land track, estinia ted to cost £lO. I CORRESPONDENCE. The Mines Department inquired if tho Council required either of the Keystone ooring drills 'which were at present -ving idle on the "West Coast.—lt was ' resolved that the Council had no use for the drills and that the letter be handed to the Nelson Coal Syndicate. The secretary to the Harbour Board forwarded a copy, of reply received from the Secretary of Marine, refusing permission to deposit any material in the sea. (The .Council had applied for permission to allow spoil from "the Rocks Road outside the city boundary to be thrown over the sea wall. Dr Pearless intimated that he wonrn accept £2O for the strip of land required to widen the road near the Church, the Council to pay all expenses. —Accepted. Mr 3. H. Tagn. Wakefield, requested /he CJouncil to look into the matter of a small bridge at the Baton. The writer stated that he had been refused permission bv Ml* Lublow to use the Bridge (which was on Council property). —The Chairman moved that- the Engineer inquire as to -the Councils rights and report at the next meeting. Mr W. H. Bryant on behalf of the Church authorities wrote in regard to the Council's notice to trim trees on the Church property, and requesting that nothing more than had already beer, tione be insisted upon. Cr Macmahon considered that instructions had been g:ven -to cut down trees which should not be cut down. Trees which had been planted to beautify and were not injuring the road had been ordered to be cut down. Several instance? quoted by Cr Macmahon. Messrs Risley Bros. a»»d Co. complained thai the track to their property at 'the Graham river was in an impassable state. —Left ;o the Engineer with power to act. Mr G. W. Kinzett. Aw a. again wrote regarding the state of the crossing to his property, which had become almost impassable. It was stated that the crossing had been damaged in the course of road work by the Council. The Chairman said the Council was under n>> liability in such a matter, and previous similar applications had been declined. Cr Macmahon considered it was unjust to damage a person's property and then refuse to make good the damage. The Council divided on a motion thatm action be taken. Ayes (4) Ihe C hairman. Mr C. Remnant, Motueka. drew attention to the state of bridge near his property in Alexander's Bluff road. —Referred to the- Engineer. A ]K?tition to the Minister for Public Works was received from the residents of Tadmor. Sherry, anfl Wangapeka for a grain- for the erection of a cart bridge over the Tadmor river. Ret erred to Engineer for a report Mr E. L- Arnold, Tadmor, asked that the road leading to his property be pushed on with.—To be attended to as soon as possible. Mr Joseph. Eves applied for permission to erect a 'temporary gate across a " .road at tha head of Trass Valley for five or six months.—To be informed that the Council has no power to grant request until the Act was complied wr:h. Mr O. G. Body. Appleby, applied for permission to erect- poles for a telephone connection.—Engineer to report. GENERAL. The Engineer was instructed to interview Mr Senior regarding a deviation of the Mapua road. It was resolved that tlie necessary steps to be taken to raise £I2OO for the purpose of a waterworks reserve for Stoke. The Chairman reported that the K> -vvaka bridge was in a bad state, and that two new stringers and some new decking had been ordered. In regard to the Motueka bridge the Chairman said he would take the Engineer and members to inspect the bridge with a view to the consideration of specifications fqr Te-instatement- of porfTons of the bridge. The Council agreed to meet at the bridge. It was resolved to invite the Motueka Borough Council to act with the County Council in the destruction of willow trees on the second island above the Motueka bridge. In regard to 'the road at Goldes Downs, it was resolvrd on the motion oi Cr Best, seconded by Cr Drummoiid. that a sum not exceeding £ls be expended :n rc-pairing it through Messis Bislevs' property. On the motion of Cr Best, seconded bv Cr Corder, the engineer was instructed to report as to the cost of scarifvirg the road from the \\ akatu Post to the Turf Hotel. The Council adjourned at 3 p.m. SPECIAL MEETING. A special meeting of the Council wa» held at- noon to consider the balanc* sheet. It. was resolved that the balance-shee-" be adopted and a synopsis advertised. It was resolved that the Valf-holiday be observed on Wednesday in localities tinder the jurisdiction of the Counc.l.
