PERSONAL MATTERS
Sir Walter Buchanan, M.P. for Wairarapa, who has been on a visit to the Old Country, will return to the Dominion by the Niagara, which arrive* at Auckland from Vancouver on July Ist. He will be given a public welcome by his constituents at. Carterton.
Mrs R. Askew, an old resident of Nelson, is to-day celebrating her 81st birthday, and many friends have called to extend good wishes.
Sir Joseph Ward is not quite sure when he will got back to New Zealand, but he expects to be here before the middle of July. His friends will be glad to learn that the change of scene an J the relief from the cares and responsiHlities of office have been of marked benefit to him, and at the time of writing (April sth) lie was feeling better than he had done for years past. —London writer.
Captain J. Houlker was last evening presented with a case of silver ii:oimted pipes by the boys of Company 50, Senior Cadets, of "which he is in command. Captain Houlker has found it necessary, owing to pressure of other engagements, to ask to be relieved of his cadet work. Colour-Sergt. Bell, on behalf of the boys, made the presentation, and expressed the high regard thev had tor Captain Houlker, and at his" call the boys gave three hearty cheers. Captain Houlker, in thanking the cadets for their gift, expressed regret at leaving them, and he hoped they would alwavs endeavour to maintain a high standard of drill, and that manv of them would avail themselves of the opportunity to gain commissions by examination.
