St. Paul's Cathedral was crowded two hours before the service. Ihe King drove to the Cathedral without an escort. lie was in Admiral's unilorin. Mr. Asquith and Colonel s>eeiy represented the Cabinet, and there were also present the leaders of the Opposition, the Lord Mayor, relatives of the dead explorers. representatives of learned societies. Captain Cillins represented S' l Georgv R-eid. The service started with the singing of "Rock of Ages." The height of solemnity was reached when the "Dead March in Paul" was played by a band. The introduction oi' the names of the five explorers into the collect "We humbly leave them in Thy Fatherly keeping" made a deep impression.
The service closed with the congregation singing ".Tesu. Lover of My Soul, and the playing of Beethoven s march. Crowded services were also held at Devonport dockyard and Portsmouth.
