'- . .Impoitant new regulations in xegard to/the administration and control of the police force will appear in a «up-piemen-ary " Gazette to-morrow. One of theee deal with the personnel. Owing to the growth of the work at the four chief: centres '■. the inspecuiis are unable to devote as much time to supervision as is desirable,; and to remedy this it is proposed (the Minister of Justice said to-night) to make the chief police officers in the.'four chief centres —Inspectors Ellison, Kiely, Mitchell, and Dwyer—superintendents, and the following promotions, and transfers will take place in consequence of the change in rankt of the "present inspectors. Sub-In6pectbr Hendry will, come to Wellington, and act .a s inspector under Superintendent Ellison: Sub-Inspectcr McGra h. of Christchurch, .will go to Auckland as inspector under Superintendent Mitchell: Seriior-Sergean s Johnston and McKinnon will be promoted to the rank of sub-inspectcrs. and will take the place of the sub-inspectors who are being promoted. Senior-Sergeant Johnston going to Auckland, and SeniorSergf ant MeKTnnon going to Cnristchurch.
There are a number of vacancies in the ranks of the sergeants caused by deaths, retirement?, and promotions. These will be filled shortly, and probably before the end of the present month there will be increases of pay in varipus ■' grades of the Gervice, which; with the- changes mentioned, will come into force on April lrt.
