AUCKLAND, Nov. 25. An inquiry was opened 'before a coroner and a- jury this morning in connection. with the death of an infant whose body was found in a locked brwf bag on some s-teps at tlie -wat-erfront in Quay-street. Dr. Casement Aiken deposed to having made a post mortem examination The .'body was fully nourished and weigncd 61b, which was below the average. It had been treated in a very prin?:tive manner, and the cord was tied three times round the neck. A piece of tape, three-quarters of an inch -wide was tied in a reef knot around the neck. Three oak leaves had been .pressed tightly into t'he child's mouth. There was a fracture on. the right side of the but it was possible that this might- Jiave been caused when the bag was drapped on the steps. In the opinion of the witness the child had lived, and the cause of death was suffocation, which might have been caused by the leaves or the tape referred to. At the request of the chief detective the coroner granted an adjournment until December 17th to allow of further policy inquiries.
