Colvin, M.P., acknowledged copy of resolution passed by the Council in reference to finishing the NelsonMurchison railway, promising to give his support thereto. The Murchiscn County Clerk ack nowlidged with thanks a resolution of a similar nature. The Clerk also acknowledged telegrams in reference to the public meeting in Nelson with -the same subieot, and expressing appreciation thereof. Air. A. J. Sloss applied for a motorcar license.—Granted. Messrs John Fuller and Sons applied for a license to use the old Salvation Armv Barracks for picture shew pur pose.s. An application was also made to carry insulated electric cables across Bridge-street to the hall.—The Mayor said that the committee had inspected th-e building that afternon ; and it was resolved to grant the application subject to slight alteration* being tarried out .to the satisfaction of the Engineer. Messrs Rout, Milner, and Gully wrote on behalf of Mr. Thomas Lisle Adams notifying that their client was willing that the proposed pipe drain should \,<- a 12-in one instead c.f .a. 15-in, and to fulfil the conditions on his part mentioned in a previous letter.—Referred to ■Comirittee.

Mrs M. A. Reay, on behalf of residents of St. Vincent-street, asked the Council to erect an additional lamp le tween Hactings-street and Washington road. An eppended memo, by the Gas Engineer state-1 tha 1 - the lamp applied for was not on the list of those urgently rcfju'red. He recommended that trees on private property shading the pre sent laa'p on the corner of Washington road and St. Vincent-street b*> trimmed. —Owner of trees- to be requests to trim same.

The secretary Nelson Chamber of Com •merce forwarded the resolution passed al the last -meeting re the purchase of Maitai lands, urging the Council to take without further jelay the necessary steps for the acquisition of the 10 acres specified by the Chamber.—Referred to Com mittee.

Mr. John Web ley drew the Council's attention to the need of a larger water service in King-street.—Referred to Ccm mittee.

.Mr. F. A. E. Franklin, Victoria Crescent; asked the Council to give attention to the road at the back of his property. —Referred to Committee, City Engineer to report. Mr. John Scott, builder, on .behalf of Mr. Nightingale, asked for permission to connect a bakehouse to be erected at the back of his premises (New Zealand Clothing Factory) with the old sewer., drain to be laid from bakehouse and stable and connected with old drain. It was stated that the new sewer in Tra-falgar-street was too high to connect with. The drain would be laid with a fall of not less than 1 in 60.

The Engineer stated that the only way to drain .the 'properties in this locality was to put a. sewer right through to Bridge-street. If connected with the Trafalgar-street sewer the drain would be some 3 feet-above the ground in places. .Referred to Committee, with power to act. REPORTS. SPECIAL COMMITTEE. RiE PURCHASE OiF LAND WATERWORKS RESERVE. The Committee reported as fellows : That the sun: cf £6OO be paid on account of the purchase money, and that the balance remain at interest at 5£ per cent, until a- registered title can be oblain-Td without [prejudice to the question as to who is responsible for the ccst of the survey. The following letters have been received and considered by the 'Committee since the date of the last Council meeting, and they bt.g to report thereon as follows: —(a) From the Town Clerk, Masterton,' requesting the Council to support an application to the Minister of Interna] Affair 3 for power to local bodies to sell coal.—That the action of the Masterton Borough Council be endorsed ; (b) From the treasurer of the Nelson Institute, requesting payment of one quarter's subsidy, amounting to £37 10s.—That the amount be paid ; fe) From Mr. W. Wilirot. on behalf of the licensed drainage contractors, as to administration of drainage by-tows.—(l) That the Committee having conferred with the City Engineer and Mr Price as io administration of the drainage by-laws, beg to recommend that by-law~2sc, which requires the deposit of" £1 with each separate amplication for p permiit, be waived, and that in lieu thereof a permanent deposit of £1 be taken from anv drainlayer to cover the whole of the work he has in hand : (2) That as Mr. Wilmot's letter deals with matters which have already been fully considered and

Hookey) reported :—Coal carbonised.. 291 tons 9 cwt; gas manufactured, 3.449.7C0 cubic feet: gas per ton, 11.836 cubic fact: candle power, 18. Coal in stock, 285 tons ; tar in stock, 12.0C0 gallons. The amount received for residuals was 5229 5s 9d. Four new services had been installed, and 92 metres had been .removed to date ENGINEERS REPORT. The City Engin-e-er (Mr. J. G. Little John), reported "inter alia : .Streets and footways.—The work during the fortnight had consisted largely of patching and cleaning up th.3 sides of th-a streets and footpaths. The completion of the Institute made 'Soire work necessary ■on the footpaths round the building. should be done in conjunction with the work being doneiby the Institute-authori-ties. Storm-water sumps had been cleaned out. The repair of the Waimca-stxeet drain was well forward. The cleaning out of the upp?r weir was in hand. Some •lefect had arisen in the mains in the large dam, but it would not be advisably to deal with it until the wcrk at the weir was finished. Matters at the ceiretery and .reserves had been attended to. Permits bad been issu€d for nine buildings, valued at £755. It was decided to impair the- footpaths at the Institute. ABATTOIR MANAGER'S REPORT. *' The abattoir manager reported that 908 animals had been slaughtered during the nast fortnight, two, of which had been condemned. , ORDINARY BUSINESS. On Cr. Harley's motion, it was resolved that the matter of formation, of a footpath en the rior-th-ern side' of Brough^nr-street be referred to the Com mil tee. It was 'also resolved, on the motion of Cr. Sncdgrass, that £2 10s be expended in making ap approach to Mr. R. Hamilton's property in Brougham-street. The Council rose a-t 8.55 p.m.
