The Supreme Court sittipgs opened today before Mr. J-ii.stice Chapnran, \v;ho, in his address to the grand jury, con-. gratulated the district on "the total absence of crime on ithis occasion. The only criminal business was a case adjourned from the previous sessions j against John Vernon' Binley (telegraph operator) and Edmund John Walsh (grocer) for conspiracy to defraud ' ;bookmakers by tampering with telegrams connected with the Wanganui .races. Other counts were aJso preferred against" both accused for attempted jfalse pretences. There is one count against Bin-' ley alone for obtaining 'money junder false [ .oretenoss and for forgery of telegrams. The cases are proceeding.
