Miss Jessie Orr, who has had 15 years' -continuous training in Guy's Hospital, London, has been appointed lady superintendent of the Auckland Hospital. She will reach New Zealand in about five weeks' time.
Mrs Staples-Brown, 'better known in 2fcw Zealand as Maggie Papakura, has <juite settled down to English country life at her home in Oxfordshire. She ias been in London recently, and called «at the High Commissioner's office w:th her .husband. Those of the Maori troupe who remained in England gave a successful.'.performance at Bristol recently.
The Rev. Henry Howard, of Adelaide, is- about to visit New Zealand on a five tour. He is acknowledged to ba Australia's greatest preacher, s «nd was specially engaged seme while iack for a lecture tour in the United Kingdom. It is expected -that Mr. Howerd will lecture in Nelson about the end of this month.
Our Wakefield correspondent reports <that Rev. O. R. Hewlett, vicar of Wakefield, has handed in his resignation to the Bishop owing to ill-health. Residents ranch regret the step .Mr. Hewlett has ielt rt necessary to take.
It is "understood that Mr. P .Best, <chairman of the Waimea County Council, will not stand fcr re-election at the. •Council meeting next month. Mr/Best has been a member of the Council for 22 years, and has occupied the position of chairman eight tirres, the last sever, occasions eonsecutiveiv.
Miss Winifred Betts, of Nelson, a first year's student at Otago University, at the recent examinations gained the following- in the class list in the three subjects taken : —First class in advanced mathematics : first class in senior mechanics (head of list) • .qnd second class in junior practical cherristry.
