WATERWORKS LOAN.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —On Wednesday next a poll is to be taken re the raising of a loan for the purchase of an area of land on the south side of the Fringe Hill as an addition, to the Waterworks Reserve. The amount of money required is but small, namely £I2OO, while the benefits to be gained are very great. The undersigned would, therefor© strongly urge all ratepavers to vote for the above-mentioned loan on the following- grounds : 1. By far the chief reason for the purchase of the land is that it is highly important to conserve the bush on the area for the sake of the town's water' supply. It is a well-established fact* that though forests do not attract rainfall they are of the utmost value in cod serving a water supply by preventing the rain from running off the surface immediately it falls. Now most of the tributaries that feed the Brook Stream draw their supplies from the area which ,it is proposed to acquire. If the bush is destroyed as it probably will be if it remains in private hands, the water supply of the town will certainly suffer both in quantity and quality. 2. A minor advantage, but yet a considerable one. is that the Dun Mountain line from Cummin's Spur to the Third House Saddle will become a public walk for all time. ■ 3. The climb to the top of the Fringe Hill via iCumminV Spur will also be included in the Waterworks Reserve. Peo-", -nle have frequently in the past been forbidden to trespass both on the Dun Line and on the Fringe Hill. 4. It is almost certain that a large area of land on the eastern side of Fringe Hill will shortly be declared a scenic reserve. The land which it is now pronosed to acquire by means of the ]oan lies in between the area' mentioned and' the Dresent Waterworks Reserve. With all these areas linked up, Nelson will possess a magnificent forest reserve close to its doors that in a few years to come will be of great value to a residential citv such as ours on account of its scenic attractions. On these grounds we would strongly uree all rat*>payers to vote for the'raising of ;the small loan of £I2OO in order to ennoble the land to be purchased for the city. 3T6« i T. A. H.
