RUN OVER BY A MOTOR CAR

FURTHER PARTICULARS OF THE LONGBURN FATALITY.

WELLINGTON. April 18.

Percy Field, the victim of tl;e motor car accident, had beetl at Longburn for nine months. He came from Waiwera, in the South, where his parents res:de. From a statement mrde by the stationmaster it appears that neitner he nor the victim heard or noticed the car till it was right on them. Field was carried about 30 paces. The stationmaster cannot account for the accident. J. W. Milner. the driver of the car, said he had three passengers. In a. statement to the police they declared that they were travelling slowly, having just passed the railway crossing. Ihe horn was sounded, and the car was on the right side of the road. They also cannot account for the accident. Uhey found the car suddenly on two men. one of whom jumped right in front.

EVIDENCE OF THE STATIONMASTER. PALMERSTON N.. This Day. At the inquest on the body of Percy Field, the victim of the Longburn motor car accident, 51 r Downes, stationmaster, said that neither he nor Field saw the car till it was within ten paces. The deceased jumped to one side and witness to the other, deceased being knocked down and carried about 40 paces. The car had two lights, btu they were not verv bright. He thought they were kerosene lights. The driver informed him that the car was going only ten miles an hour, but witness replied that he thought it was nearer 30 miles. Both witness and deceased were sober. Witness admitted that both had had about 12 drinks each during the av commencing w:th four at 10.30. three at dinnertime, three at 6.30,. and two at 9.45.
