VARIOUS ATTRACTIONS. Yesterday did not break promising for holiday-makers, steady rain falling up till about 8 o'clock. The weather then' cleared, and the rest of the day, though not ideal for outdoor enjoyment, was taken advantage of by many to have a day in the open. In town the chief attractions were the bowling tournament and the inter-provincial football match. At the golf links a large number of enthusiasts were present; and the Sands and other pleasure resorts . were fairly well patronised. considering the unpromising outlook. The Koi took a number across the 13ay to M-otueka, wlieio the local Horticultural Society held its autumn show, and the friendly societies sports took place. The train service was fairly well takju advantage of, the flower show and dog trials at Tapawera being the chief event in the country. THE HOLIDAY AT. TIMARU. (United Press Association^ TIMARU, 'April 8. The weather was dull, but fine, for the holiday. The attractions were tho Bicycle Club's sports at Tcmu'-a, and the show at Fairlie. At the former Christchurch cyclists were prominent among the prize winners, Everett gettins; two firsts (half-mile and mile)* and Hiimm, Wall, and Bones, seconds. The mile scratch race resulted: Everett 1, Wall 2, Young 3, O'Donoghue 4 (the two last-named being local men). The runners were local men. A new competition, sheaf tossing, drew over a score of competitors. The highest toss was 19£ feet. The Fairlie show drew many from Timaru, and tho attendance was a record. Every section of the show containted good represen • tative exhibits, save field roots, which have not matured well this year. The Agricultural Department had an in teresting exhibition of roots grown on the -experimental plots near Fairlie and at Belfast. About 90 varieties were shown ; ialdo grown in an enclosure in the Macken - -' zie Country in re-grassing experiments. The best of them were sheep's Burnett, blue grass, and Danthonia nuda (two native grasses). The prize fat ox was a big one, estimated to go over 19001b. \
