At tile Police Court to-day 48 young men were charged with having failed to render personal service under part 6 of the Defence Act, 1909. A good inanv names were not answered to, several having been pronounced medically uniit for service. .Most of the accused pleaded guilty, and offered no objection to tlu: decision of the Court. Fines of iD2 and 7s costs were imposed in some cases. Others showed good cause to; exemption, and the excuses were given attention to. Others were let off on paying costs. Several stated that they would not pay the fine.
ARRESTS AT CHRISTCHURCH. CHRISTCHURCH, March 7. There wore two further arrests to-day for failure to pay fines inflicted for breaches of the Defence Act. Ed war J Henry Edwards and Walter James Hooper, who failed to pay a fine and costs amounting to £2 10s, were to Lyttelton-to -work- out -an «';;t(»r»iar;ve of twenty-one days' imprisonment. It is understood that warrants are out for the arrest of five others who have broken the Act, and failed to submit-.to the penalties inflicted by tl l - Mav't-iNile FINES AT CHRISTCHURCH. In giving reserved judgment in cases in which conscientious and - religions-:. jections were raised. Mr Bailey, S.M., said that the question of religion could not. arise till the men were' put to service. It was the duty of everyone to register and take the oath, but the Defence authorities could consider religious objections later. Fines, were imposed. Counsel for the defence indicated that an appeal was probable-.
