Captain Amundsen is still reticent. He stated, however, that when he left Buenos Ayres he went straight south to the ice, where, on January 13th last year, he met Captain Scott's Terra Nova jn the Bay of Whales. He made a base camp in the great Ice Barrier in Longtituae 164 west. Latitude 78 south, where he remained with nine men while the Fram returned to Buenos Ayres.
Of the work in the camp Captain Amundsen resolutely refused to speak. When the Pole was mentioned he- became dumb, and declined even to -.say on what dat 0 lie left- camp for Hobart. though lie remarked that he enjoyed good weather. ' Apparently Captain Amundsen had not returned to the Fram on January 16, when Captain Neilsen met tli e Japaneseexpedition, which reached the Ice Barrier. Captain Amundsen said that he did not 6ee the Japanese, and he knew nothing of their position or plans. Asked as to his future plans Captain Amundsen said that he intends to stay a. few days in Hobart. He then goes to Buenos Avres, tlienc e around Cape Horn to San Francisco, up through Behrings Straits and try to follow the original plan of drifting across the Arctic with the ice, coming out between Greenland and Spitbergen. Captain Amundsen is the only member of the expedition who has landed. Representatives of the Press visited the Fram, but were not allowed to board or to engage in conversation with the crews. '
Captain Amundsen regrets that he is unable to give information in view of the kindness he had received, but his engagements made it utterly impossible. As soon as he can he will show tho charts and give the fullest information. He took 103 Greenland sledges and dogs, and brought back only 39. SYDNEY, This Day.
