BURGLARS CHOOSE THE WRONG SAFE
EXPEDITION OVER ROOFS. A daring burglary took place in Sydney on the night of February 14. wh'i' the. premises of Messrs Allen and Hanbury, Limited, 15 and 17, Market-street were entered. When tlie employees arrived at t-lie warehouse next morning they found the ground floor in a, state of confusion. Within the general offi'eo\two safes stood in one corner—one about 4ft. bv 3ft.., the other 3ft. by 2ft. The largo safe contained the only ca-sh on the premises, about £3O. Books and documents alone- were contained in the second, to which the burglars had turned their attention. They apparently overturned the safe. ;i.nd placed a- detonator of dynamitp in the key-' hole. It was found empty, the books thrown out, and tho iron shelves -and drawers bent and x broken. The safe containing- the money, remained intact. An inspection of the building and its surroundings was made by Superintendent Rocho and , Senior-Sergeant Fuller-, ton, of the, Detective Office. They traced; the intruders'' entry to a. small" window on the top floor. There was evidence of the men having climbed up-the stag-; ing and temporary ladders of the building in ■ course of construction several' doors down in Kent-street. , From this building siey liad- evidently equipped themselves: with took and a ladder, and then climbed a. .couple of intervening Toofe. From the last building they fixed the ladder across a fairly wide passage to tho window of Allen and Hanbury's top floor, and: sot to work in professional style.
