COST OF PENNY POSTAGE.

~ At the end of February penny postage within - the Commonwealth will have been in operation for i.O months, and tlrr- Federal postal authorities have, since last May, when the system was inaugurated, kept in close touch with the financial aspect of the question. It was anticipated that penny postage wo;ild at the start mean a loss of £1400,000 per year. This was consider-ed-to be a conservative estimate, and £450.000 had been set down by some authorities as nearer to the mark. . From figures already in the hands of the post.il authorities it would seem that the lower estimate will prove very nearly correct. Thipre are two months to go still, but frojn figures that are already available tha, first year's loss will he within £20,000 one way or the other of £400,000. each succeeding year this deficit will, according to the authorities, become less and less, through the increased business that will result from cheap postage.
