HEAVIEST FLOOD FOR YEAES. AN ANXIOUS TIME. DAMAGE AND LOSS OF STOCK. (By Telephone.) (From Our Own -Reporter.) MOTUEKA, Tins Day. Th e floods last night were higher than for 34 years. The water in the streets was with'in three inches of the "•old man flood" mark. The water broke- through at the protective works at Whakarewa, and poured in immense violence all through" the borough, there 'beintr six inches of water in High-street. Houses in the lowJvine parts of the town were flooded, and the residents spent an anxious night, some removing from tlreir dwellings before the flood rose too liio-h. Many people "were about all night rendering assistance. A good deal of damage has been Gone to cro.ps, and many sheep have been drowned.

The flood reached its height at 4 o'clock this morning; but it has now subsided Tapidly owing to a heavy fall of snow in the ranges, which saved the situation.

News from Ngatimoti states that the. vertical pier of the new suspension bridge has been moved from the perpendicular. At Lower Moutere the approach 1 to the new .bridge has been washed away. The Nelson coach was go 1 ' over by taking out the horses.
