AN OTAGO PLAYER FOR NELSON
Mr John Dunlop, secretary of the Ota go C'hess Club, and one of its most promising players, intends shortly to leave Dunedin for Ne'son, whert he proposes to go 3-s assistant to i\l.r G. F. Dodds, .formierly 'of Dune din, mow d«ntist in Nelson. ,Mr Dunlop, who is quite a young mail-, joined the Otago Chess Club two years ago, and soon came into prominence as a player. Starting modestly, 'he won the club's junior championship in 1909 with a score O'f six clear wins. He also came out on top in the same year' in the handicap tournament with the handsome score of 16 wins 2 losses. This young player further took part in 19C9 in telegraph, matches against the Oamaru and Timaru Chess Clubs, and defeated- his opponent in each, match. The season of 1910 saw Mir.Dunlop aspirant for senior honours, and lie fulfilled expectations by .becoming- senior champion of the Otago Chess Club, with a score of 6 wins 1 draw. He also aw a in. won the annual handicap tournament, achieving 15 wins 3; losses. Th£ executive of the OtagcS Chess 'Club thereunon promptly nominated the young champion to represent the club in the contest for the chess championship of Ney/., Zealand!. :Mr Dunlop acquitted himself., creditarbly in the tonrfciambnt. ; for - the premier chess poisitiorr-in Nevv- Zealand. He cam© equal fourtih, .with two other plaiyers, and* won a guinea, with a score of 54. wins and 4£ losses.
