THE PACIFIC CABLE.

INCREASED EFFICIENCY. Press Association.—Copyright. SYDNEY, Wednesday. Mr Milward, manager for the Pacific Cable, Board in the, Pacific, has returned from a. visit to Canada. He says the ■Board now controls the line of communication from Australia to Montreal, and has effected an installation which will enable the despatch of cables to be expediated by 25 per cent.. In other words, the line will be able to deal with 25 per cent, more business in a .given time. Mr Milward's mission to Canada was for the purpose of installing apparatus and taking over fpr the Board the line previously leased from the Canadian Pacific Company's telegraphs. The Board can now carry messages over' 61C0 miles with only one land line. Under the old system three handlings were required. if the innovation was likely to lead to a reduction of ra.tes within a reasonable time, Mr Milward said: "It places us in a.- better position in regard to- reduced cost. The present weekly average of the Pacific line is 42,000 words ,and this has shown a marked and continuous increase. It is conceivable that if the Board increased the carrying capacity of the cable to a large extent, and the public supplied sufficient business, the rates may be affected. Referring tc» the All Red route, Mr Miilwar<V declared that it. would be an advantage to have a cable right through, as the Atlantic cables .it the present time were practically controlled by American capitalists.
