CUnitbd Phess Association.)
NEW PLYMOUTH, Tues.
At the Tarana-ki Education Board meeting- to-night, Inspector Whetter reported that, wishing to see how Taranaki stood with regard to Junior Scholarships, he had made an a.rialysis of those who had qualified for these scholarships" in the Dominion. He had based his calculations on the attendance- return* of 1909 jowing to the 1910 returns not being available. Taranaki had 45 schools, with 5793 scholars. In percentage of scholarships per thousand ' Taranaki headed the list with 7.7 per thousand; Marloborongh next, with 7.0; Wellington. 6.9: Otano, 6.4; Hawke ? s Bay, 5.b; Auckland, 5.4; Westland, 5.4. THE CLAIM DISPUTED. ' NELSON'S POSITION AS PREMIER. i, (In connection with the foregoing telegram it is learnt that for the last two years th-e highest place in tfce examination referred to ba s bear, .pained by pupils in the Nelson Education District. In the 19C9 examination William H. Morris, of Roefton District High School, came first in the Dominion, with GS4 marks out of a possible 800, and last year Edward "Gifford of the Westport District High School gained top place with 690 marks. The Taranaki comparison appears of little value as the number of competitors from each district does not seem to be taken into account in the basis of the computation. In the 1910 examination eleven candidates from the Nelson district gained higher marks than the candidate who wa s placed ton in the Marlborough district—the district which gained second place according to the New Plymouth telegram.) .
