ANNUAL MEETING.

The annual meeting o£ the Nelson branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union was held in ihe Baptist Schoolroom yestwday afternoon, rwhen there was a good attendance! of members. Apologies were recived from Mesdames Mules and Hunter-Brown.

The election of officer s resulted as follows:—President, Miss Ruth Atkinson; vice-presidents, Mesdames Crump, Field, Watson, and Miss Gascoigne; hon. B ecretary, Mrs. F. V. Knapp; hon. treasure.-, Mrs. Grove. The aanraal report read by Mrs Knapp mentioned the visits to Nelson' of Airs. Shepherd and Mrs. A. R. Atkinson. Reference was also made to tibe successful garden party, which realised a net result of £SO; the election of two women to the Hospital Board; the repeal of the Contagious Diseases Act; to the new Licensing Aot; and ihe circulation of the magazine, entitled "Motherhood." The death of Miss Ramon, a .prominent and faithful worker, was alluded to. The important work to .be dealt with in the coming year was -also noted. Mrs. Grove submitted the annual statement, -which: showed that £36 had been disbursed in temperance and other work, £2 10s being sent to the Maori Mission; work. A substantial credit balance was carried forward towards next year's operations. Mrs. Henry, wife of Dr. Henry, was i introduced by Miss Atkinson. Mrs. Henry delivered an address on the Tem.panamce question, dHiring Kvhich -she was pleased to note the advance that had been made in New Zealand- licensing legislation. . The women's crusade in Amo'ica against the drink saloons was dwelt noon, and also the beneficial results that had followed agitation, education and legislation. Temperance instruction wasi given- in American schools, and prizes were awarded for Temperance essays and orations. All women were urged to join the W.C.T.U., so that they could work unitedly to free New Zealand from the evils that affect the homes and happiness of the people. Seven new members wore enrolled into the Union. Afternoon tea was partaken of, ana the Doxoiogy was then sung and the Benediction "pronounced.
