The friends of Mr John Jimies will be sorry to learn that his son Thomas was taken suddenly ill on Sunday morning. The young man attended to his morning'sduties with his other brother, and shortly afterwards was found in one of the sheds very ill indeed. Dr WarneEord was immediately sent for, and the doctor advised his immediate removal to the Nelson Hospital, where he arrived on Monday morning and underwent an operation in the afternoon, and we are pleased to report that everything is tavourable towards a speedy recovery. Mr Cummine. chainman on Mr Cummine's survey stall'.' Marina, was also taken seriously ill on Sunday last. and Dr Warneford was sent for. Mr Frank Shae, carpenter, met with an accident on Saturday last, breaking his ankle, and will in consequence be laid for some time. MEDICAL ASSOCIATION.

A meeting of the- Executive Committee of the Memcal Association was held on Friday evening, the 12th ult. Present: Messrs S. L. Fairhall (chairman), W. H. Kanderson. C. H. Beilbv. V. T Mainamara. C. Morel, J. Downie, and H. tt. Horner. It was proposed by Mr I airhall, seconded bv Mr V. T. Macnamara, that the Association'hold a plain and fancy dress ball on Friday evening. Ah October, to be called the second annual ball Proposed bv Mr Homer, seconded by Mr W. Beilbv, that Mesdames Boves Goodver. Watson. J. Bennett, Horner, A. McKee, and Miss O'Kourke. be requested to form a provisional committee with power to add to their number to make arrangements. CarriedMr Fairhall proposed. Mr Beilbv seconded that Messrs Horner. C. Morel. MacNamara. and Banderson be appointed Ball Management Committee.. Proposed bv Mr Fa?rhall. seconded by Mr Morel. that a copy of the' Doctor's sea e of chartres be. supplied to each membei of the Association, and that 250 cop.es be procured.

FOOTBALL BALL. The Murchison Rugby Union held a very successful plain and tancy dress ball in Downie's Hall on triday night, the 12th ult. The hall presented quite an animated appearance. lhere were about 100 couples present besides spectators. This was undoubtedly the iecord ball, and the query arose in a good many minds where all the people come from, and for once the- large and commodious hall was found rather .small tor the concourse of people who attended tho ball. Dancing was indulged m until 3.30 a.m. on Saturday morning. Good music was supplied by Mrs Hunte! (piano) and Mr Joe Goodyer (y.olm). ex-tras-bein K supplied by Miss A. Hunter Messrs W. McFarlane. O Oxman. and John Goodyer. Mr H. Fauchelle made a capable M.C. . , Durin<r the evening the Vice-President of the Hugbv Union, Mr H. Horner in a few well-chosen words, presented the Cup to the'captain of the Braeburn Football Club, and the medals to the \luuia team, which had won in the at-t-rno(.n the saven-a-side tournament. MiR O'Connor then very suitably replied on behalf of the Braeburn Football Club. •Supper was supplied at midnight by the LadieV Commrttee. and great praise is duo to them for the maimer in which they performed their arduous duties. Scott The proceeds from the ball amounted to £24, and will form a good help in augmenting the Union s funds fo>- the forthcomig tour.

MEETING. A meet ills' of the Management Committee of tho Union was held last Saturday momifio at 10 a.m. Present : Messrs H. Horner, R. O'Connor. \V. Rogers, N. Spiers. N. Vercoe, and J. rioodyer. Mr Horner was voted to the chair" The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. It was resolved to send the rep. team away on Wednesday, August 18th, by Newman's coachT Resolved to play a match with Cronadun team on September 3rd.
