PEERS & THE PEOPLE.

CIVIL LIST ATTACKED. Prjess Association.— Copyright. LONDON. Tuesday. Mr. G. N. Barnes. M.P.. speaking at Glasgow, said he was not optimistic regarding the Parliamentary Conference. and every delay weakened the democratic force opposed to the Lords. He would be ready to pay ■handsomely to maintain the Crown, but there were tremendous abuses of the Civil List, too many people fattening upon the working men and hiding themselves in the shadow of the Throne. The trades unions would not be justified -until the Osborne judgment was reversed.

THE KING'S CIVIL LIST £470.000. The proposals of the Civil List Committee were published a few weeks ago. No change is made in the sum (£47U.000) voted to the Kirm and Queen, and after allowing for " the annuitv of £70,000 to Queen Alexandra the increase in the provision for the Royal Family is £I3,UOU. In recommending no change in his Majesty's Civil List the Committee state : They are satisfied that provision made in 1901 was adequate, but not more than adequate, tor the proper maintenance of the dignity of the Crown. The provision for the King and Queen is as follows : £.

Privy Purse 110.000 Household salaries and pensions 125,800 Household expenses 193.000 Works 20,000 Royal bounty and special services 13,200 Unappropriated 8.000 Total £470,000 Provision!- for other members of the Royal Family are as follow : Alexandra £70.000; King Edward's daughters £IB,OOO ; Duke of Connaught £25,000; Princess Christian 6000; Princess Louise (Duchess of Argyll) £6000; Duchess of Edinburgh £6000: Duchess of Albany £6000; Princess Henry of Battenberg £6000; Grand Duchess of Mecklenburg-Strelitz £3OUO; Total £146,000. No further provision than the revenues of the Duchy of Cornwall (£87,000 last year) is considered necessary for the Prince of Wales. The present King as Prince had £20,000, but the Diichy yielded in 1901 oniy about £72,000. When the Prince marries it is proposed to assign the Princess £IO.OOO per annum, with £30,000 should she survive him. For the King's other children the proposal is: Sons.—£lo,ooo a year each at majority, and £15,000 further on marriage. Daughters. —£6000 a year each at majority or marriage. .The understanding will be that Parliament shall not be asked to provide for cnildren of younger members of the Royal Family*. That is the case at present.
