A STRAITS SETTLEMENT TROUBLE.
TRANSHIPMENT CHARGES COMPLAINED OF. [Press Association—Copyright.] LONDON. Monday. A deputation representing the shipping companies complained to Lord Crewe of the Straits Settlement Bill imposiuer a 20 oer cent duty on freight. Sir James Mackay said it was contrary to British law, and an intolerable interference. The actual trade of Singapore was insignificant, but the transhipment trade under this abnormal Government interference had been transferred to Dutch ports. Lord Crewe said it was a serious matter for the Imperial Government to interfere, and advised the conference to remedy the producers' real grievance.
