AMERICAN AFFAIRS. MR. TAFT AND THE "INSURGENTS." IMPORTANT RETIREMENTS. [Press Association —Copyb.iq.it.j (Rec. August 16, 8.50 a.m.) NEW YORK, Monday. It is reported at Washington that President Taft has made terms of parity with the insurgents. Mr Ballinger, Secretary for the Interior, will shortly retire. The Administration will not help Mr Cannon's re-election to the Speakership, and Senator Aldrich has been dropped from the inner Republican Councils. (In March last, a combination of Democrats and Republican "insurgents" succeeded in ousting Mr Cannon from the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives, and with his fall the old Republican organisation immediately crumbled. Mr Cannon was endued with immense power by the rules, and di£ not.hesitate to use it in such a way that "Cannonism" became a. byword representing everything corrupt, tyrannical, and reactionary. Senator Aldrich. as one of the staunchest supporters of the Payne, or high, tariff, is particularly obnoxious to the "insurgents," and the disfavour with which he and Mr Cannon, according to the cable, are beins treated by President Taft and his administration, is a sign that the Republican Party is making desperate efforts to wm Back its wandering members at the cost of sacrificing some of the leaders of the old regime).
