THE WORLD'S CHAMPIONSHIP. LONDON. July 1. Ernest Barry, the English sculling champion, had ail enthusiastic send-ofi at Waterloo Station oil Saturday, when he left to embark on the Kildonan Castle /or South Africa. The rowing and riverside world was represented on the platform. Mr Guy Nickalls being a prominent figure in the crowd. Hearty cheers were given for England's champion as the train steamed out of tin station. In an interview Barry said he felt in the pink of condition, and hoped to win. although he was well aware of the formidable task he had set himself. The following telegram was received by Barry on board the Kildonan Cast It just before she sailed :—"On behalf of myself and the directors of the British South Africa Company I send you best wishes for a very pleasant visit to lihodesia, and wish you every success in the big task which you have undertaken on the Zambesi. I hope when you return we shall be able to welcome you not on ly as champion of England, but as champion sculler of the world." Great interest is being taken in the event here, a_s not since 1875. when Sadler beat Boyd, has the sculling championship of the world revolted into Eiiglish hands. The last time an filnglishman competed for the championship was as far back as 1896, when C. A. Harding made an unsuccessful attempt to beat Stan bury on a course laid out from Putney to Mortlake. Barrv is taking out three boats, but probably the one he will use is the Lady lines, built on the destroyer pattern. It is 27ft lonf, or Ift longer than the average short- boat, Barry being a firm believer in a long bort, more particularlv as he rows such a very long stroke.
