The National Mortgage Co of New Zealand advises as follows on the wool • market:—The month just closed has not been particularly auspicious for'wool as both fine and especially coarse sorts are all rather lower than" at oc"innin~ of the month. This .define is not the natural sequence of bad trade. as ! quite a good business has been doin" all through the month, but is more or less connected with uncertainty as regards the future, and an unsatisfactory* feature of the situation is that very little fresh business has been coming to hand, almcst all the activity having been in connection with old orders. Owing to their scarcity, merinos have occupied a relatively stronger position than crosshreds. but signs are not wanting that the usual attacks to "bear" the market, previous to the opening of the new Australian season, are already being made. as witness the somewhat severe fall on the "futures" markets on the Continent, which can be attributed to no other cause. America, again, continues in a bad way, and there is scarcely any demand there for Australasian merino wools. The outlook,- it will thus be seen, is not altogether satisfactory, but at the same time it does not appear likely that fine wools will -suffer anv pronounced fall just jet. if only on the score of their temporary scarcity", in fact durj'n? the last few days there has been a better tone in the demand. Coarse cross-breds as stated have also lately been m less request, and* tops must be called about 5 per'cent. easier than during the currency of our May auctions. No doubt the marketing of our homegrown clip has induced extreme caution on the part of user's, but as with merinos, ne wbusiness has been very hard to get, and until this comes alo.ig higher prices can scarcely be expected.
