At the inquest into the Beaufort disaster, the Coroner found that the accident was primarily due to the unskilfulness or carelessness of Driver Coward, or to an error in the manipulation of the brakes, and that if fitter Fewstcr had done his duty faithfully the accident would not have occurrol. Drivers Gronn and Coward, instead of insisting upon the,litter doing hi. l ' duty, had taken the risk of running, the engine as it was. Contributory causes were the faili'.'e to properly repair t'lie engine, and Die long period of fourteen hours during which Co,ward was on duty.
