The conversion of 90,000 acres of 'swamp land into dairy farms is the big undertaking being carried out between Morrins-ville and tie Hauraki Gulf, in the Auckland province, by the Government. The ' Piako swamp was a hopeless place for even flax-growing until drainage works began some years ago and the Government is carrying out a big scheme to bring the whole area intp profitable occupation. Mr. D. Buddo, ■ Acting-Minister of Lands, visited the works during his Auckland trip, and was very much impressed with the. possibilities.
