I THE BRITISH PARLIAMENT. i j At S. John's Methodist Schoolroom ! laßt evening thc Rev. J. J. Lewis gave a popular recital, entitled "The British Parliament, and its Greatest Leader. ' ' The address was of a very interesting character, and was listened to with great interest by those who were present, applause being freely given during the course of the speaker's remarks. Mr Lewis divided his topic into three 'parts, and first of all gave an outlino of the institution and. growth of the British Parliament and CdnStitutidn, then making mention of a large number of the names which were prominent in the history of tho nation, viz.: — Walpole, the Duke of Wellington, Sir Robert Peel, Palmerston, Lord Chatham, C. J. Fox, Canning, Edmund Burke and Russell. After paya gracious tribute to the memory of John Bright, he concluded with a lengthy reference to "the greatest Prime Minister Britain had ever known, William Ewart Gladstone." whom the lecturer characterised as a man noted for learning, eloquence, and statesmanship, and also as a man who walked humbly with his God, In the third portion of the address lessons were drawn from this Parliamentary study, and Mr Lewis closed with a quotation from Mr Gladstone's address as Rector of Glasgow University. Songs were * rendered during the evening by Messrs Bert Tasker, T. Taylor, and E. Richards, Miss Bethwaite kindly acting as accompanist.
