WAI-ITI LITERARY SOCIETY,

The closing • social in connection with the Wai-iti Literary .ana Debating Society was held in the State Schoolroom' on Friday evening last. The attendance was estimated nt about 150. The President (Mr .Edridge) welcomed -the /visitors (or guests) of the evening," and maSe ' a stTong appeal for more, support . and encouragement from . the ndults of the district ; stating that since the inauguration of the Society six years ago, much, good, work of an educational character had resulted. This was sufficient reason and justification for the continuance of the seciety, and the support of everyone in ttio district. The programme was . of a varied character, consisting of a 'number of parlour games, guessing competitions, vocal and instrumental music, readings and recitations, as follow:—Selections by the Wakefield Band, and Mr H. Batt 's phonograph; songs by Messrs S. Field and "W. Lightband; duet, Mr and Mrs Lightband; quartette, Misses Lammas, Hoult, Messrs 0. and S. Hoult;:- male .quartette by Messrs T. Field, W. Lightband, P. Palmer,' and L. Hoult; duet by Misses E. and A. Palmer; readings by, Messrs EEdridge and I. Tunnieliffe; 'rseitationf by Mrs J. Cropp and' Mr T." Cropp, and Mrs J. W. Eves. ■ Later on a -liberal supply of refreshments, including fruit, was handed round. The party Woke up at eleven o'clock, after hay Tug spent a very enjoyable evening.
