THE RECENT NAPIER TOURNAMENT.

At tihe last meeting of the Nelson Hotkey Association Mr Floyd (manager) of the Nelson team) submitted his report on. the tour, from which the following extracts are made : — "The team left Nelson on 17th August and arrived in Napier about 7 p.m. on; the 18th. They were met at,. the station] Iby Mr Shirley (hon. secretary of the I Hawkes Bay Association). On Thursday , a short practice was held on the Recreation Ground ; and on Friday the team journeyed to Hastings and played their tirst match against Wairarapa B, which was won by 4 goals to nil. Saturday they won against Wellington by 3 to 1; Monday against Taranaki by 3to 1 ; Tuesday against Wanganui by 2to nil ; Wednesday they lost to Hawkes Bay by 4 to nil ; Thursday won against Wairarapa Aby2to 1 ; 1 riday a draw against Horo. whenua ; and Saturday llhey lost to Auckland by 3to 1. On the whole tlse team did not play up to form; and their shooting, compared with Hawkes Bay A and Auckland, was poor. The standard of play was very high, especially between Hawkes Bay, Auckland and Nelson. The behaviour of the team was! excellent, and all worked harmoniously. Everyone spoke in (high praise of the manner in which the Nelson team conducted themselves both on and off the field. The Hawkes Bay people had laid themselves out to give the visiting teams a good time, and no end of entertainments in the way of dances, euchre parties, evenings, etc., were got up for their benefit. Nelson attended only two of tilicse functions — a dance on the first Saturday night they were there, which was given by the Maroro Ladies' Hockey Club for the Nelson team ; and secondly the Hawkes Bay Association's ball on the following Friday. Tjhey wil linjly consented not to go to too many cf these functions, as they fully recognUrrt that they went to' win the cup! .-.nd not to attend every entertainment ( that, was given, although the hospitality . extended was the none the less apprecinisd. An informal meeting of the X.7.. Ladies' Hockey Association was peM at Hastings-, at which several mat-' teis of importance were brought up and diFcnssed, and several recommendations i wc-r? sent on to the N.Z. Association at I Christchurch. Reference was made to tho lo.'A- that a block vote was given on the proposal to hold the next tournament at Noison. Mr Floyd stated that the tour-nan-.ent from start to finish was carried o:it in a most satisfactory manner, reflecting creat credit on the officials of tjho Hawkes Bay Association, and espelially on Mr Ernest Shirley, the secre-. tary, who was most obliging and ever ready to do anything in -his efforts to ! make the visiting teams' stay as pleasant as possible. During tho progress of the ladies' tournament at Napier the Nelson team were indebted to the local secretary (Mr-j Shirley) for many- little acts of consideration. To show its appreciation- of this, 1 the Nelson team, in conjunction witlh Mr Floyd (manager of the team) and Mr U. Savage (secretary of the Nelson Associi- ; lion, who had much porreppoiulenee with I Mr Shirley) have forwarded to thit iPjcial a silver-mounted shaving set. . J
