NOTES AND COMMENTS.

• The Nolaon Horticultural [Society'a Bullb Show -will bo open at the Drill Hail to-morrow afternoon." Early-grown: sweet peas are - now well forward, and the_ first :blooms are expected in some gardens in the early days of October. Sweet peas have been very largely sown.this season, and the display that will be made at tho shows to be -held later on should be most attractive. The date of the local sweet pea show has not yet been fixed; but it is understood that it will be held early, in January. Those who have not • yet got their seed in will still be in time for the sweet pea show if they get to work at once. Two valuable - prizes -will 'lie competed for at tiiis show —the Bolton trophy and the Nelson Seed Company's special of £2 2s. Seed sown now will "hit" the January show just right. This reminder may be appreciated 'by some of our readers. Two classes in the-ladies' section at the Bford (England) flower show received special press mention by reason of the great utilitarian end at "which they aimpd. One was the class for table centres foraied with a soup plate, tumbler, and sand, illustrating, as it did, the possibilities of artistic effect. when unable to go to the expense of; a costly glass centre. The first prize in this was won with an, arrangement of iris and fern, and' the second with violas. The other class ■ was an arrangement with a strawberry punnet, and here again it was. shown how easy it is to obtain a good effect with a discarded strawberry basket and a few single garden flowers. Mr P. T. Medwin, orchardist, of Tasmania, toeeived as high a price as 289 a case for some choice apples in London this year. This is the record price so far reported for 1909. A shipment of 2500 cases of oranges and lemons will bo sent from South Australia .to. London this season.
