(before Mr H. EyiL-Kcmiy, S.M.) FRIDAY, APRIL 16, 1909. ■ ILLEGALLY ON PREMISES. I At the Magistrate's Court this morning William Ellis pleaded guilty to , being unlawfully on the premises of A. \V. Shallcrass, Provincial Lane. i It appears that EUis some time ago ; met with an accident at Puponga, when some of his fingers wer c blown off owing to an explosion of dynamite. He was brought to the Nelson Hospital for : treatment, and lately has been permitted U) come into town during tht da|\ On Wednesday, however, he failed to return to the institution, and n? a consequence was discharged. Between 12 and 1 this morning the nightwatchman discovered Ellis sleeping in a lorry in Mr Shalkrass' stables in Provincial Lane. The poliea were inform. e<i, and Ellis, who was considerably under the influence of liquor, was arrested. It was stated that Ellis (who appeared in Court with his hand bound up), was on a fair way to recovery from his accident if he would take care of himself. The Magistrate sentenced Ell : b to a •nonth's imprisonment, with hard . labour. Mr Kenny explained that he had no option but to formally include hard labour in the :entence, though it was obvious that the accused could nof do any work. It would be necessary foi- El'is to havo bis hand dressed at the Hospital, and h e could be taken there by a constable.
