N. Jones. ! Auditors: P. Bond and J.. H. Finney; Secretary: J. Glen. Tiic first day's racing in connection with the Jockey Club's annual meet- ; ing was got off at Richmond Park yesterday, having been postponed from the previous day on account of rain. Yesterday morning broke fine, and remained so; but early in tho afternoon rain began to fall, and throughout the remainder of the day there wero showers. Tho conditions, 'therefore, were unfavourable from all I points of view. At noon the attendance seemed about up t 0 the average for that hour, but there was very little increase in the afternoon, and thus the number who attended was considerably less than in previous years. The fact that there was no half-holiday yesterday afternoon, ; and in addition the uncertainty of ; the weather greatly affected the atj tendance. The acceptances for the ■ events had been good; but there was au unusually large number of scratching*, leaving small fields in ostrao of 'lie. events. The "big money" was won by San Fernando in a field of five. Two protests were considered by the Stewards, both being dismissed. ■ In the Hope Handicap the owner of • Bracken protested against the .stakes going to King Try, on the ground that Smith, tlie rider of King Try. had : r.ddi-ii inside a jjost vii the inside of iI he course. .Smith, when first before the Steward*, admitted that he had ridden inside the post. The Stewards, however, decided to inspect the- course, and, after going over the pr.iuuJ, could find no hoof marks off the course. On tho inquiry being re-•iimi-d, Smith explained that Gillet (I he ridi-r of Bracken, had told him that he had ridden inside the post, and • it was owing to what Gillet had told him that he .had previously told the Stewards that he had ridden inside the post. Smith did not know that he r.in inside tho post. Tvinpr's Wrofit h's rider (Tapp) said that he was too far I behind to -«cc anything, and Watson (tho rider of Lucretius) said that he did not see King Try off tho course during the progress of the race. The Stewards dismissed the protest, returned the protest money, and fined Smith £o for making a misleading statement. The other protest was in the Grand Stand Handicap, the owner of Lothair alleging that Vineo, tho winner, had weighed in without a breastplate. As Vinco drew his weight the protest was dismissed, and the protest money forfeited. The various officials ably carried out their duties. Selections by the Garrison Band greatly enlivened the proceedings throughout tho day. The amount put through the machine was £2204, agains £3432 last year. Two bookmakers did business on the courso yesterday, having paid a fee of ,£2O ■ each. The following are the lesults: — I I.. Trial Hack, of 30 soys.; second 5 soys. from stake. Five furlongs.
