NELSON DRAINAGE WORKS.
THE NEED OF HOUSE CONNECTIONS.
Several matters in connection with the drainage works cropped up at, tne meeting of the Nelson City Council last evening.- The Engineer (Mr Artcheson-Smith) stated that so far <2M connections had been made. In reply to Cr Bisley, he further stated that 1511 further connections remained to be done. The success of the drainage depended upon the number of connections that were made. Mr Smith went on to say that if the old sewers were maintained, as ;ome people seemed to think they should hi, the sewage would still go out on to the mudflat. Under - the bylaws the Council had power to force 'residents to connect with the new mains provided the pipes were within 100 feet of their boundary. If the work was not carried out the Council could do tho work and then sue for the money. Cr. Robertson pointed out that it cost a great deal of money to pump the present sewage with the few connections, but he understood that when the ful! connections were made tho sum would be greatly reduced.
