The NMson Jockey Club's races were continued to-day at Richmond Park with fine weather, and much increased attendance. The bookings by railway from Nelson exceeded four hundred which was an improvement on yesterday. Tlie first race yinrted ut •noon, and the racing was proceeding as we went to press.

The stearo trawler Norah Niven met with a mishap a few miles out in the Bay this morning. Her trawling gear became entangled with her propeller, rendering her helpless. The Anchor Company's steamer Koi went to her assistance and towed her in. The Norah Niven has been placed on the hard, and it is expected that the gear will be disentangled by the next tide. It is thought that little damage has been done.

It is notified that meetings of householders for the election of School Committees will be held in each of the school districts within the educatin district of ~elson on Monday, 26th inst., at 8 p.m. Nominations of school committees must bo made a week before the meetings or at the meetings. Secretaries of school committees would oblige by posting or otherwise forwarding the names of the new committees for publication a 6 soon after election as possible.

A meeting is called for Tuesday evening next at the Chamber of Commerce Rooms for the purposo of forming a Nelson Branch of the National Defence League. Great interest is manifested throughout the Empire at the present time in tho question of defence ashore and alloat, and the Premier has intimated that he intends at the approaching session of Parliament to bring down a measure providing for universal military training after the method advocated by the League. It is of the greatest importance, therefore, that the membership ol the League should be increased as much as possible before Parliament meets, so that any steps taken by the leaders of the movement may have the weight of large numbers behind them. Membership of the League being open to either sex, women are specially invited to attend the meeting on Tuesday evening.
