THE NELSON RIFLES. On Saturday night a very fair number cf in.. 1 NeUon Rifle.-., under Capt. Stewart and Lieut. Johnson, inarched several mile; up the- Maitai and bi-vuuac-.-id till jiiterday morning. A pi-Oi.':ai.-i_ne of work suggested and ar-r.-.ng-d by Staff -Sergt. Coltlo'-gii was lti-iikl out. An 'Hitpost line was established and maintained throughout tlie ni^ht, and -t 5 o'elock yesterday morning judging distances practice was engaged in, the results being very fair. The distances ranged were 230, 446. 610 .ind 770 yards. Afterwards field-firing took place at an unknown range, which proved by testing shots to be about 1000 yards. Tho corps is to be coiigratulaU-d on its new departure, and it is pleasing to learn that the men took great interest in their work ; but whether tho Maitai , Valley is the s.ifest locality for rifle practice is a question that should be well considered. The corps will again carry out a similar programme in the near future. The Motueka Mounted Rifles carried ■nit outpost work on the hills, near Whakarewa, on Saturday night, when 53 men paraded under Lieut. BatcheIcr. Lieut. -Colonel Joyce was (\efient and expressed himself plv;ftd with the work. Sergt. -Majors Redmond (mountea) and Colclough (infantry) are to le congratulated on initiating schemes for all-night training.
