ON WANGANUI BREAKWATER.

(Special to the "Mail.") WANGANUI, Thursday. The Anchor Company 8 steamer Charles Edward, Captain Uraham, had ilia mistortun* to run aground last evening at the extreme end of the breakwater, where the extension works aro proceeding. The vessel now lies well up out of the stream with her bow practically $ between the piles and the stern partly m the stream. An extremely heavy sea was running when the vessel crossed the bar, aim this, with the strong southerly wind blowing and the shallow water through neap tides, is stated to have kept the vessel off her direct course and turned her on to the breakwater. The heavy sea running prevented the assistanco of tugs at high water last evening or this morning, but before noon a wire hawser, was got out to prevent further drift out of the channel. The vessel is reported to be leaking slightly, owing to the severe bumping during the night, tut though s^e <-: :n an awkward position, every hop-a is ertertained that she will be safely brought off when the tides make again m the course of a few days. The Charles Edward's cargo of Westport State coal will be discharged In the meantime into lighters, and as the sea is fast moderating no further damage should result.
