BRITISH POLITICS.

[Press Association. — CopynjonT] (Received September 26, 9am) LONDON, Friday. For ths Newcastle by-election, caused by the death of Mr Thos. Cairns (L.), Mr G. Renwick (U.) was elected with 13,863 votes; Short (R.), 11,720; Hartley (Soc. and Lab.), 2971. (A recent cablebram stated that the recent decision of the United Irish League leaders and priests to vote with the Unionists had greatly improved Mr Geo. Renwick's chances at the Newcastle by-election. The reason assigned was Mr Asquith's prohibition of the procession of the Host at the Eucharistic Congress and Liberal attacks on Roman Catholic schools. The Cuntess of Warwick supported Mr Hartley, a Socialist candidate. Mr Shortt (R-adical) bitterly complained of ths candidature by Labour, which already holds one of the two seats for Newcastle. Mr Thos. Cairns, Liberal member for Newcastle-on-Tyne, died the other day, thus causing a vacancy. The other seat is held by Mr Wm. Hudson (Labour), Mr Geo. Renwick, the Unionist candidate, is a member of Fisher, Renwick and Co., shipowners, and he was formerly M.P. for Nowcastle-on-Tyne from 1900 to 1906.)
