To the Editor. Sir, — Just now, when the smoke testing of drains is attracting so much attention locally, the following extract may interest your readers. It may be found in a work on "Modern House Construction," published about two years ago, and is taken from the article on" drainage (sec. VIII.) written by Mr Wm. Spinks, President of the Institute of Sanitary Engineers. He says: "It is desirable and necessary to apply a test to drains to ascertain whether the joints remain watertight and that no sewage is escaping. Some few years ago there was quite a craze for testing drains by the smoke test. While this has certain advantages inside a house, it is absolutely useless for discovering the unsoundness of an externa! drain. The only reliable way to test a drain is by the appliance of water pressure. i I am, etc.. RATEPAYER.
