(Press Association. — Copyright.) SYDNEY, Monday. Brookes will ba unable to visit England this year to defend his title of champion of All England, and the world's championship. AUCKLAND, Monday. A very large number of passengers left by the steamer Mokoia for Sydney this afternoon. In the steerage there were 181 passengers, about 37 being Australians who have been engaged for some years in gum digging, and who ar. now leaving with the intention of remaining in Australia. DUNEDIN, Monday. A deputation met Mr R. McNab, Minister of Lands, at Balclutha to-da_y, arjd urged the acquiring of the Chiton and Otanomomo estates, comprising upwards of 21,000 acres, for closer settlement. It was urged that fully 116 farmers could be placed on the land U it was cut up. The Minister of lands promised that the Chairman of the Land Purchase Board should inspect the estates and report as to their suitableness for closer settlement.
