THE DRAINAGE WORKS.

ACTION BY MEDICAL MEN. As stated in yesterday's issue, a meeting of the Nelson division of the New Zealand branch of the British Medical Assn. was held to discuss alleged deviations from specifications which have been made in connection with the drain-' age scheme. Resolutions were passed at the meeting, and it had been the intention to call a public meeting before the City Council met in order to arrange for ' presentation of the resolutions. In view, however, of the Council meeting this week on Wednesday instead of Friday, there will be no opportunity of hold- ! ing a public meeting, and at a further ' meeting of doctors last evening it was decided that the resolutions be published. The resolutions were as follows : — ; (1) This division of the New Zealand branch of the British Medical Association desires to put on record : That the j active support and assistance of the rnedicaJ profession in Nelson was sought ! in ordqr to obtain a loan to carry out the . drainage scheme; that' the representatives of the Council obtained the signa- . tures of the various medical men resi- [ dent in Nelson to a manifesto urging on the ratepayers the necessity of providing Nelson with an efficient sewerage system, on the understanding that the plans and specifications of Mr Mestayer (which had already been approved by the Public Health Department) should be carried out in their entirety. (2) This division views with the gravest alarm the action of the Nelson City Council in permitting any variation or deviation from the plans and specifications of the consulting engineer. (3) That any deviation by. the City Council from what Mr Mestayer considers to bo vital principles of ""his scheme must be fraught with the greatest danger to the community. (4) That all th c work already carried out, or yet to be done, should bo examined and passed by an independent inspector, preferably an expert by the Public Health Department.
